The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially opened applications for the R1,250 Foster Child Grant this August. Caregivers looking after foster children can now apply either online or in person, with the aim of receiving quicker processing times and more convenient access to financial assistance.
Why This Grant Is Important
The Foster Child Grant is designed to help foster parents and guardians meet the day-to-day needs of children placed in their care through a legal court order. This monthly allowance of R1,250 per child can be used to cover essential expenses such as food, clothing, educational materials, and healthcare.
According to SASSA spokesperson Lerato Mokoena, this initiative is more than just financial aid. “It is about ensuring stability, security, and dignity for children who need it the most. We want caregivers to focus on raising the child, not on battling through paperwork.”
Who Qualifies for the Foster Child Grant?
To be eligible for the R1,250 monthly grant, applicants must meet certain requirements:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee.
- Have a valid court order placing the child in their foster care.
- Ensure the child is under the age of 18.
- Not be receiving any other grant for the same child.
The grant is paid per child, meaning caregivers fostering multiple children will receive a separate payment for each.
How to Apply in August 2025
SASSA has made the process simpler by offering two application options:
- Online Application – Applicants can visit the official SASSA website to fill in the form, upload necessary documents like IDs, proof of residence, and court orders, and track the status of their application.
- In-Person Application – Those without internet access can visit the nearest SASSA office, where officials will assist in completing the application.
When Payments Will Begin
Once approved, beneficiaries can expect their first payment within 30 days. Monthly payments will then be made as long as the caregiver continues to meet all eligibility requirements.
Tips for a Smooth Application
SASSA advises applicants to ensure all documents are clear, valid, and up to date to avoid delays. Caregivers must also inform SASSA immediately about any changes in the child’s living arrangements or the caregiver’s circumstances, as this may affect grant eligibility.
The Foster Child Grant offers both financial support and reassurance for families taking care of vulnerable children, helping them to provide a nurturing and stable environment without unnecessary financial strain.
